Archives introduce themselves - The Berlin State Archives

By Nathalie Huck

As the central state archive of the state of Berlin, the Landesarchiv Berlin holds the written records of Berlin authorities, courts and institutions from various eras as well as a wide range of sources on the city's history. As a result, it possesses an extraordinary wealth of unique documents on the development of Berlin, which are continuously supplemented by regular acquisitions.

In 1991, the Landesarchiv merged with the Stadtarchiv Berlin from the former eastern part of the city, the Büro für stadtgeschichtliche Dokumentation und technische Dienste (Office for Urban History Documentation and Technical Services) and the Verwaltungsarchiv des Magistrats (Administrative Archives of the City Council) to form a new all-Berlin institution. In 2000, the Landesarchiv received further valuable additions through the integration of the archive department of the Landesbildstelle as well as the archive of the International Building Exhibition (IBA). It now also sees itself as an archive of the audiovisual media of the state of Berlin.

The archive records of the archive, founded in 1827, document Berlin's history from the oldest document from 1298 to the most recent acquisitions from the Senate authorities and make them available to the public. The main focus of the holdings is on the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the holdings with supra-regional significance are the magistrate, senate and judicial records, the files of the GDR mass organizations and the state-controlled economy of the GDR, as well as the Helene Lange Archive with archival records of the older German women's movement. Judicial and financial files contain important information on persecutions during the Nazi era, and the holdings of the leading municipal associations document German municipal politics of the last hundred years. The written material originating from state and municipal offices is supplemented by estates and collections.

The reference library of the Landesarchiv Berlin is available to employees of the institution as well as to the public and provides support in research and consultation of library and archive holdings. Its collection focuses on publications on the history of Berlin, gray literature, law and ordinance gazettes, and archival literature.

Up to now, you can search in accordance with the offer in Findbuch.net in all holdings up to 1945 that are not subject to a protection period as well as in the finding aids of the photo collection and the registry offices. The upload of holdings will be continued on an ongoing basis.
