In this virtual exhibition, we would like to present ten documents and stories that are not necessarily typical and well-known, but worth seeing. The occasion for this presentation is this year's nationwide Archives Day. Based on the original idea of the head of the archives and museologist Antje Winter, this is the first virtual exhibition of the Troisdorf Archives. Archives Day 2022 takes place under the motto "Facts, Stories, Curiosities". We show and describe ten finds and sometimes unusual stories from the holdings of the Troisdorf Archives.
Fürth & Nürnberg - 100 years failed unification - centuries of shared history

The occasion for this exhibition is the centenary of the failed unification of the two towns in 1922 to form a large municipality - there was never any official talk of incorporating Fürth. A local political earthquake with a referendum in favour of Fürth's independence prevented these plans. So the towns used to be right next to each other, as they are today, mostly, but perhaps not always, in solidarity.

At the end of the Second World War, almost 9,000,000 "Displaced Persons" (DPs) lived on the territory of the defunct German Reich. After a large-scale repatriation, most of them had been "repatriated" to their countries of origin by 1949. Among the remaining "homeless foreigners", as the DPs were called in official German since 1951, were numerous old people, sick people and people with physical and mental disabilities. The former Wehrmacht site in Augustdorf, Lippe, developed into a home for more than 2,000 homeless foreigners during these years. Their living conditions were in part catastrophic. The v. Bodelschwingh Institutions Bethel began offering help in Augustdorf in 1953. The aim was to improve the economic and mental situation of the inmates through meaningful employment.

After the end of the Second World War, first the American and then, from the summer of 1945, the British military authorities took over state authority in the North Rhine-Westphalian area. After the occupation, they initially concentrated on establishing a functioning German local administration under their supervision. In the Halle district, the democratic new beginning is closely linked to the appointment of Heinrich Wellenbrink as district administrator by the Allied occupation authorities. He immediately formed a district committee to enable an exchange between the district population and the district administrator.

"Du wirst staunen, du wirst lachen": The Cosmos in the canons of Herbert Beuerle

Herbert Beuerle (1911 - 1994) was cantor at the Burckhardthaus in Gelnhausen from 1952 until his retirement and was for many years the singing leader of the Christian Singers' Association. Beuerle had a special talent for inspiring many in the congregation and also at church conventions to sing. Not least for this purpose, he composed canons that are easy to sing and at the same time musically rich. The virtual exhibition is about sixteen unpublished musical miniatures that sketch the person Herbert Beuerle.

Around 20,000 children and young people escaped the National Socialist dictatorship with the so-called "Kindertransporten" between November 1938 and the beginning of the Second World War in September 1939. The virtual exhibition is dedicated to six biographies that could not be more different. At the same time, it focuses on the local circumstances in Frankfurt, the situation in the host countries, the bureaucratic aspects and the helpers during the emigration.

Due to the pandemic it had to be cancelled twice in a row. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the development of printing increased the demand for parchment enormously. At the same time, many liturgical manuscripts lost their function as a result of the Reformation. After the dissolution of the monasteries, the seemingly worthless parchments, even entire parchment codices, were misappropriated. Bookbinders removed sheet after sheet from the wooden covers and used the material for stitching church accounts or as a protective binding for church books. Today, the manuscripts recycled at that time are considered to be high testimonies of cultural tradition.

The burning of the papal bull of excommunication, which Luther executed on 10 December 1520 as a sign of his turning away from Rome, is one of the iconic events in the history of the Reformation. The virtual exhibition of Sächsisches Staatsarchiv shows the Dresden original of the Papal Bull of Banishment in its archival context. On display are important testimonies from the chancellery of George of Saxony, which, along with the bull itself, are among the greatest treasures of Sächsisches Staatsarchiv.
