The changeable history of Schleswig-Holstein is also reflected in the formation of the holdings of the Landeskirchliches Archiv Kiel. Until 1867, the Danish king was the sovereign of Schleswig-Holstein and also the supreme church ruler (summus episcopus). After the incorporation of Schleswig-Holstein, the Prussian king became supreme ruler of the church, but the Landeskirche became largely self-governing. This is where the traditions in the Landeskirchliches Archiv Kiel begin. Archives of the state church from the time before 1867 can be found in the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein.
The ecclesiastical archives in the former northern Elbe region are organised in a decentralised manner. For this reason, the holdings of the parishes and church districts and the church records are not kept in Kiel, but in the archives of the church districts or parishes.
The Regional Church Archive supports the church districts of the North Church in maintaining the archives in the parishes.
In addition, the Regional Church Archive houses numerous bequests of important church personalities.
